The Life of a Star

Week 3

This is how she looked when first restored.

The 1982 Honda CM200T “Twinstar”! Tiny shocks, tiny tank, massive seat and HUGE rear end! Not the most comfortable handlebars in the world either! Recovered/restored from a 8 year sleep in a shed, purchase price: $0!

Phase II:

About a year later

I've been afraid of changes...

About a year later: Primered white in prep for painting, removed side covers, put some beefier shocks(look familiar?) on there to cushion my butt, a sportier set of handlebars, and a set of LED front turnsignals. You can see a dark spot at the back of the tank, this is where it will start to leak…

Phase III:

About 1 1/2 years later

So much for cushioning my butt...

About 6 months later, had to replace the tank due to the leak, of course the stock seat will not fit back on, as my only mode of transportation at the time, I had to improvise.  Seat came off an old bike I had and I trimmed the exhaust slightly too.

Phase IV:

Painted the frame.

About a year later, painted the frame flat black, painted the tank and fenders blue and cream, had a springer seat installed,  and a new lighter LED rear end!

About 3 months later, top end rebuild!  Removed the starter and battery for weights’ sake, did some painting. Bike must have lost around 70lbs by now!

Phase VI – Pressure plugs!

About 2 weeks later, in preparation for cutting the exhaust, my (very patient and talented) machinist created these pressure plugs for me, they go in your exhaust and help retain backpressure when you switch to straight-pipes so you don’t burn through your valves or something…nyuh!

Paint has gone to hell, instruments have been cleaned up/minimalized.

Sometimes I need to take a step back and let the pros in.

About 6 months later (recently), I’d be lying if I said I didn’t go to the hardware store for a hacksaw with a metal blade and just went nuts with it on my exhaust, air-box goes next to lighten even further the bike that literally feels like a heavy bicycle now, also removed the dummy gauge, gauge mount bracket, oil separator unit, rear foot pegs and peg-frames, any big wires that could be chopped have been chopped. I did have to add some weight though…

Another 3 months or so later, I’ve painted her silver enamel to match the VW and my new helmet, once again my amazing machinist stepped in and fabricated a custom intake adapter for my new stainless steel intake and welded my exhaust up 2-into-1!  I added a stainless steel crankcase filter and hid the electrics up under the tank to clean it up a bit, the rear pegs allow me to wheelie!  Engine paint and frame paint are soon to follow as well as a new front end equipped with a diskbrake!

What a busy weekend I had! Obviously I got around to painting the frame! Last minute decision on color as I wanted Honda Red but it looks so orange sometimes! I decided to make my own shade by first applying white primer, then applying VW Reflex Silver and then spraying a transparent red on top of that to create the final color, “Spamos Red Metallic?”. I also painted the engine black and wrapped my exhaust (pics soon) but the modifications I made to the pressure plugs (smaller) have made the bike unrideable! Fixing tonight!

I haven’t had time to fix the exhaust yet which was recently named “The Grapefruit Shooter” by my machinist…I love it!  Enjoy these new pics of the fully assembled bike I took before work this morning.

Re-wrap da wrap!

Finally got it running! Removed the modifications to the exhaust and had a buddy help me re-wrap it to fit my initial vision, to be honest I want as little chrome as possible because instead of cleaning my bike, I want to ride it…through the shit! I’ve read many opinions about exhaust wrap…I’ll leave it at that.  Took it for a quick run to the beach and back last night, amazing! The exhaust note is crisp and loud and it scares the crap out of anyone near me when it backfires off the higher RPMs!  Not much left to do now, need to renew the logos from the tank, restore and install the new front end and wait til you see the new rear end conversion coming soon! It’s so wild I can’t even give any details, the pics will speak for themselves :)   Here is a glimpse at the new front end I got off a ’72 cb360T, the guys at vjmog.com helped me figure out what the hell it is, www.vjmog.com!

So I haven’t been doin much with the Twinstar recently, just been investigating the CB but yesterday I had a chance to make some slight tweaks to the setup.  I removed my original shim from the carb as it was not a “set-in-stone” adjustment and switched out a more permanent shim, I also removed the pressure plugs, a noted lack of previous “umph” was noticed on the ride home and there is no more fire shooting out the pipe which is kinda disappointing so I’ll be puttin em back in soon, FIYAAA!  Here’s some pics of the bike freshly polished!

I think I just pooped a bit...

So as you know I have been considering the possibility of adding a turbo to the Twinstar, Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the 1981-2001 Yamahaabonda Twinstar Turbo!!  I’ve been looking around around and if this isn’t THE WORLDS 1ST EVER CM200T TURBO it’s certainly the first to be documented, has anyone else heard of anyone retarded enough to try this? I have seen a Rebel turbo’d but not a Twinstar… It sounds like a screaming banshee going down the street as the turbo spools very easily, it also tries to eat my pants…need to fix that.  As you can see the intake side is still disconnected so there is no performance boost yet…yet.  More to come.

So! Updates are in order! Been struggling to get the Turbinstar running correctly, thought about adding a fuel pump, but then it’ll need a fuel-pressure regulator, blah blah, blah, etc, etc, fuck that(i thought). I decided to make the turborettor, which instead of forcing air into the carb(which will NEVER work), it sucks air/gas from the carb and pressurizes it! It looks a lil something like this:

Whoop! Looks carazay right? The wildest part? it WORKS!  got a video to upload of it running before it burps up about 1/2 gal of gas! Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated as I have yet to receive my degree in advanced turbonics! Here’s another pic for ya:

Retarded right? You love it!  I’ve got the carb on backards so I had to slightly modify it to stop it from dumping fuel from the air-inlets…so I bought some self-tappers and screwed em right on in there, blocking the flow, but shit, now if they rattle out they will go straight into the turbo, anyone got some old screen off a window or something?:
